In the year 2000 there were a record number of thunderstorms. There were lots of deaths from people being struck by lightning and a few casualties – I was one of those casualties.
I am a very dedicated horse rider and do not like missing out on my weekend rides. Due to the unsettled weather I had missed out on quite a few.
This particular day I decided nothing would stop me from riding. The weather on the tv said there was going to be a storm later that day. Thinking I would have plenty of time I got my gear together and headed down to the paddock.
As I finished tacking up another quick check of the sky made me worry a little bit as the clouds had become quite thick and very dark.
I was very disappointed because it looked like I would miss out on my ride anyway.
I decided to be safe and pack everything up and just let my horse back out into his paddock. As he was running back to his herd I noticed that his rug straps were dangling on the ground and I had to run out to fix this.
This is when it happened – I was struck by lightning.
As I was running toward my horse I heard the thunder clap and then within less than 5 seconds the lightning flashed through the fields.
I felt a very hot sensation and became dizzy but I was so concerned about my horse’s rug that I just kept on running.
This is what saved me, so the doctors all said.
The fact that I was moving at the time that I was hit did not let the lightning have a chance to hit my heart or brain.
I am very lucky to be here today to share my story with you.
